With the increasing market for East Asian foods in mainstream Australian supermarkets, ‘Moguu’ is a fictional brand that aims to intersect the experienced cook who is familiar with these ingredients with one who is less familiar. The brief was to design a set of packaging for dried mushrooms that can be seen in East Asian cooking that is both sustainable and visually appealing.
Drawing on my cultural background as an Australian born to Chinese immigrant parents, the packaging aims to cater to both native East Asian cooks of my parent’s generation and English-speaking Australians. Taking inspiration from a family heirloom that is a book owned by my grandfather (seen in the image), old Chinese newspapers as well as letterpress printing, organic monoprints of real mushrooms were used to create a rustic and nostalgic aesthetic to the packaging design.
Addressing goals of eco-consciousness, packaging that combines paper printing with biodegradable plastic is designed to create a sustainable alternative to air-tight packaging for dried mushrooms. In addition to this, labels for the product in the form of stickers and tags are added within the package contents to encourage users to engage in practices of reuse and sustainable storage of food.
